Memos Reveal Serious Concerns Over Boulevard Plan

Last week, YNN’s Bill Carey reported that letters and emails from Federal Highway Administration officials revealed major concerns over the state’s focus on replacing I-81 in Downtown Syracuse with a boulevard – including a warning that a boulevard posed “the potential of rerouting 88 percent of the existing I-81 traffic onto the city street network.”

As Carey reported, federal officials “were complaining that the state had seemed to focus on just one solution, the plan for removal of the raised highway, replaced by a boulevard.” Carey also noted that federal officials said claims being made by the state about the boulevard proposal were “vague,” “unsubstantiated” or “misleading.”
