In July, the Town Board of Moravia in Cayuga County unanimously passed a resolution supporting the need to maintain Interstate 81’s existing alignment and traffic flow through Syracuse as state officials determine how to rehabilitate the aging portions of I-81 in Central New York.

The Town Board noted that replacing I-81 in Syracuse with a boulevard “could potentially alter the flow of heavy commercial traffic and increase truck traffic flow through the Town of Moravia, State Rt. 38A and thereby causing safety issues and decreasing the quality of life for Moravia residents.”

In its resolution, the Town Board requested that the state Department of Transportation “seek a solution to the Route 81 redesign that does not pose negative effects smaller outlaying communities” while maintaining I-81’s current “function and designation as an Interstate Highway.”
