Recently, State Sen. John DeFrancisco surveyed his district’s residents about their thoughts on the future of Interstate 81 in Central New York. Senator DeFrancisco’s survey found that more than 81 percent of respondents want to maintain a north-south thoroughfare at interstate speed through Syracuse. Additionally, 58 percent want to keep the current I-81 viaduct, while 22 percent support a tunnel-boulevard hybrid. Only 17 percent support a street-level boulevard.
The graphs below reflect the results of Sen. DeFrancisco’s survey based on two questions posed to the residents of his district:
What I-81 concept do you think would best serve our entire community?
No matter what I-81 concept is chosen, do you think it is important to maintain a north-south thoroughfare at the existing interstate speed?
